Understanding the Prostate & Potential Diseases
The prostate gland is an essential part of the male reproductive system, just below the bladder. It produces fluid that is part of semen. Prostate diseases can take many forms, such as prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate gland. Chronic prostatitis, acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and asymptomatic prostatitis are different types of prostatitis. Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition that primarily affects older individuals. This can cause urinary problems when the enlarged prostate presses against the urethra. Prostate cancer is the formation of cancer cells in the prostate gland, and it is a common type of cancer in men aged 50 and older. While most prostate cancers grow slowly and may not cause health problems, certain types can be serious.
