What Are Kidney Stones & Their Symptoms?

Kidney stones are solid objects made from chemicals in the urine. There are four types of kidney stones: calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine. The stone-forming chemicals are calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate. Typically, the body's kidneys eliminate these chemicals in the urine. However, when too much waste is in too little liquid, the chemicals crystallize and form kidney stones. The stones can either stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract to the ureter.

Symptoms of kidney stones may include severe pain on either side of the lower back, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills, or urine that looks cloudy and has a foul odor. The size of the stone determines how noticeable the symptoms are. Small stones may pass without causing damage, but larger stones may cause significant pain and discomfort. Treatment for kidney stones may include pain relievers and shockwave therapy, among other treatment options. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the stones.
