The stone-forming chemicals are calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate. Typically, the body's kidneys eliminate these chemicals in the urine. However, when too much waste is in too little liquid, the chemicals crystallize and form kidney stones. The stones can either stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract to the ureter.
Symptoms of kidney stones may include severe pain on either side of the lower back, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills, or urine that looks cloudy and has a foul odor.
